Night Club Dance Styles in Houston

Country and Western Dancing In addition to the classic Texas Two Step you'll also find that country spots feature Waltzes (very romantic) and line dancing. There are other dances that may be used but this writer has limited experience in the country dancing genre. Sorry about that.

The basic Two Step movement consists of two quick steps followed by two slow steps.

Traditional Ballroom Dancing Quite a few community groups have ballroom dancing nights. These events feature a lot of FoxTrot, Rumba, Jitterbug, Waltzes, Cha Chas, some line dancing, Tango, and the occasional Latin dance.

FoxTrot, Rumba, and the Waltz are more relaxed dance styles. Jitterbug, Cha Cha, and Tango are more intense and passionate.

The basic FoxTrot movement consists of two slow steps followed by two quick steps (the reverse of the Two Step). Rumba is a Latin dance but it uses a three-step movement that is similar to a Waltz.

The chief difference between the country Waltz and the formal Ballroom Waltz may be the pace; ballroom Waltz can be danced fast and vigorously but many country Waltzers prefer to take it slow. The Waltz is also popular with the Square Dancing community.

Tango is the most complicated and sophisticated style of dancing. It uses a basic five-step movement. But Tango for beginners can be quite fun.

Latin Dancing The Latin clubs favor Salsa dancing, Bachata, Merengue, Cha Cha, and sometimes a Tango. These are the most vigorous dance styles this writer has enjoyed, but many of the "moves" that you learn in one dance style are also used in all the others. So if you learn some basic cross-body movements in Salsa you'll find you can pick up the moves in Two Step pretty easily.

Salsa is the dance style taught in most of the schools, but many Hispanic people grow up learning to dance Merengue and Cumbia. For some reason many of the dance teachers don't like Cumbia but it can be an elegant folk dance and quite enjoyable.

Cha Cha is almost the universal dance style. This writer has never seen it in a country club but you could probably dance Cha Cha to a lot of pop country songs. Cha Cha is very similar to Salsa -- except that you add a little shuffle of your feet in between the basic steps. Beginners stamp their feet but more seasoned cha cha dancers slide their feet.

Hip Hop Dancing Hip Hop is a freestyle form of dance, where you don't actually hold your dance partner. It's a high-action form of dancing but is very different from the more romantic dances for couples.

Some Hip Hop teachers cull their students for dance teams that compete around the state and sometimes across the country. You need to be very physically fit to do competition-style Hip Hop dancing. It's a very athletic form of dance and just provides a great workout.
